The WAW velomobile offers the performance of a recumbent trike combined with the protection and aerodynamic advantages of a fully enclosed shell. Kevlar reinforcement adds strength and reduces the brittleness typically associated with carbon fiber. Beyond enhancing durability, the Kevlar layer significantly improves rider safety by preventing carbon fiber shards from impaling the rider and significantly reducing the risk of road rash in the event of a collision. As such, the WAW is an excellent option for daily commuting, with its enclosed body providing consistent protection from wind, rain, and cold, making year-round riding both practical and comfortable.

Condition:

This 2022, model year WAW velomobile is in excellent overall condition with light signs of use consistent with approximately 6,000 kilometers of riding. Two minor imperfections are visible on the underside of the nose, as shown in the photos. These hairline cracks are the result of occasional contact with steep sidewalk ramps where the ground clearance was insufficient. Katanga, the manufacturer, has advised against repair, noting that the cracks are superficial, do not affect the structural integrity of the shell, and are unlikely to remain repaired due to the potential for recurring contact. The defects are not readily visible unless viewed from underneath.

The WAW’s aerodynamic nose and tail sections are removable and fasten securely to the carbon/kevlar monocoque cockpit via exposed screws. The cockpit can be configured in a variety of ways to suit riding conditions or rider preferences. In the current configuration, the racing hood is partially elevated to allow increased airflow, ideal for warmer weather. Other configurations include a fully enclosed setup with the hood down and latched, a completely open setup with the hatch removed, or simply using the mini windscreen for a more open summer ride.

Wheels, Tires & Suspension

This velomobile rides on a pair of 20-inch wire-spoke front wheels and a 26-inch rear wheel, all fitted with Schwalbe tires. Two sets of carbon fiber front wheel covers are included, offering both performance and aesthetic appeal. The ride is supported by full suspension, including a Suntour DNM DV-22AR rear shock with coil spring and a pair of MacPherson struts on the front axle, offering excellent road absorption and cornering control.

Interior Features

Inside the cockpit, the solo seat is covered in black Ventisit™ ventilated mesh fabric, known for its breathability and comfort. The seat is adjustable for height, angle, and fore-aft position, allowing riders of various sizes to dial in their fit. The seat can also be tilted forward to access the rear cargo compartment, which includes a bicycle pump and ample space for commuting or touring gear.

Mounted to the dashboard are three toggle switches that control the vehicle’s main lighting, daytime running lights, and hazard flashers. A Cycplus bike computer is mounted within easy view and provides real-time readouts of speed, distance traveled, and ride time.

Controls & Electronics

Braking is handled by a set of Sturmey-Archer 90mm drum brakes on the front wheels, actuated by individual brake levers located on each of the vertical tank-style handlebars. The left handlebar also features switches for the high/low beam headlights, integrated turn signals, and a horn. The right handlebar includes the rotary gear selector for the 14-speed Rohloff Speedhub. This hub gear system is particularly well-suited for velomobiles, as it allows seamless shifting whether the bike is in motion or stationery.

Steering is controlled by both vertical handlebars, providing precise handling. Reversing the vehicle is a manual process: the rider reaches forward and pulls the front wheels backward to maneuver out of tight spots.
